Footballers' chance to live the dream in the UK

MORE than 30 aspiring soccer players from Perth will embark on a tour aimed at inspiring them to achieve a career in the sport. Reece Abrams, Graeme Stewart, Sam Wright and Mateen Ismail from Perth, East Fremantle and Balcatta soccer clubs are among the gifted group of 11 and 12-year-olds. Former professional players Barry Wood and Mark Lee have dreamt of giving the talented players from their Pro Football Training Development Program an opportunity to learn from elite players and coaches and have used their own contacts in the UK to make it a reality. The coaches want to provide them with inspiration to never lose focus of their goals. It will cost about $7500 each for the 32 young travellers, so parents are fundraising and seeking corporate sponsorship. About 72 people will be in the tour group that leaves on September 30 for England and Scotland. Wood said the boys would play games against Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle, Sunderland and the Blackburn Rovers and train with academy directors. “The games will be competitive but the training sessions (including one with Manchester United) will be just as important,” he said. Fundraising events include a screening of The Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2 at Grand Cinemas Whitfords on April 27, a psychic dinner at White Salt in Sorrento on June 14, race night in Forrestfield on June 24, bingo in Tuart Hill on July 11 and a quiz night at the Riverton Leisureplex on August 13.
